Prerequisites

To qualify for the Ontario Child Protection Mediation Roster, an individual must be able to prove they have met the prerequisites outlined on the Roster Eligibility page. These prerequisites include successful completion of the Ontario Child Protection Mediation Training , a satisfactory Criminal Record check completed within the last three (3) years, liability insurance, 3 satisfactory professional references, to include two (2) references from person that the applicant has mediated with (IMPORTANT: see criteria below), signed Code of Ethics, signed declaration of validity of information and fees. These prerequisites will be described in detail below.
Ontario Child Protection Mediation Training Certificate
All persons seeking to apply to be placed on the Child Prodection Mediation Roster must successfully pass training at an educational institution accredited to provide Ontario Child Protection Mediation training. Educational institutions that are approved to provide this training are listed here. Ontario Child Protection Mediator Training accreditation alone does not qualify an individual to be on the Ontario Child Protection Mediation Roster. Further requirements are listed below. There are prerequisites for the training, which are listed as follows:
Practical Experience and Success
All applicants for Ontario Child Protection Mediator training at an approved educational institute must have the following practical experience:
- at least 60 hours of training in family mediation, to include 20 hours of skill based training;
- at least 10 family law cases mediated to the point of agreement including Memorandum of Understanding
Applicants must provide proof of ten (10) successful mediations to point of agreement, in the form of the "Memorandum of Understanding" (MOU) that is a necessary criteria to define a successful mediation. The content and form of submitted MOU's will be reviewed for adequacy by the Registrar of the respective educational institution.
Other Prequisites
Police Check
All Child Protection Mediators desiring to be included on the Ontario Child Protection Mediation Roster must obtain a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, which has been completed within the past 3 years.
Liability Insurance
All Child Protection Mediators desiring to be included on the Ontario Child Protection Mediation Roster must submit proof of current Professional Liability Insurance, in the amount of no less than $1,000,000. Proof must be submitted annually on the renewal date of the policy.
Professional References
All Child Protection Mediators desiring to be included on the Ontario Child Protection Mediation Roster must provide three satisfactory professional references to include (2) two references from persons the Child Protection Mediator has either mediated with (co-mediated) or who have referred a client to the applicant for a mediation, together with their contact information. IMPORTANT: Please note that the references associated with actual mediations must be related to mediations involving family or child protection cases AND IT MUST BE CLEARLY INDICATED WHICH CRITERIA (Family, co-mediation, referral) IS APPLICABLE TO THE REFERENCE. Code of Ethics
All Child Protection Mediators desiring to be included on the Ontario Child Protection Mediation Roster must adhere to a Code of Ethics, which is referenced in the Registration form.
Fees
The administration fees to accompany the Application for inclusion on the Ontario Child Protection Mediation Roster are $100.00. This payment must be paid by cheque or money order, payable to OAFM, sent by mail to The Ontario Child Protection Mediation Roster Program at the address on the contacts page. Credit Card payment is also possible, either by email, phone, or in mailed application. In the future, it will be possible to make credit card payments online on this website.
